The Editorial Team

Bridget Gourlay

Chief Reporter

Getting the chance to talk to such influential New Zealanders about their lives and experiences is the best part of my job. In the past 18 months I’ve had the privilege of interviewing interesting people such as fashionista Annah Stretton, former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley, athletics legend John Walker and many more.

It’s been a tumultuous – literally – time for me at the Academy newsroom since I joined the editorial team a year and a half ago, with the earthquakes changing Christchurch forever. I enjoy writing about our city’s path to recovery and seeing real progress be made.

I have a double degree in journalism and political science and I am enjoying building my career here in the Garden city after an exciting O.E in 2009.

Originally from Wales I came to New Zealand in 2008 for a six week holiday, Three years later and I still haven’t left!

After travelling around Australia and New Zealand I decided to settle in Christchurch. I joined the tourism industry and for two years I loved the high-paced, people role. Unfortunately due to the Christchurch earthquake tourism has declined and I decided to move forward and use my degree in Journalism.

I have always had a passion to write. I studied Journalism in the UK at Chester University for four years. Since then I have been travelling around the world, putting a pen to paper, writing about my passions which include: Travel, food & wine, sport and world news.

I am looking forward to working with the Academy (family) and building on my experience as a Journalist. I am also glad I timed it well to be here for the Rugby World Cup, just such a shame we had to miss out here in Christchurch.

Melinda Collins

Journalist

A passion for the written word has never escaped me. Since earning my Diploma in Journalism from the Otago School of Media in 2001 and a Certificate in Media Communications from Aoraki Polytechnic, I have continued to write both for pleasure and profession.

But by far the most formulative of my writing years have been those following my employment with Academy Publishing in 2008. Since then I have written a vast range of hard news content, cover profiles and advertising features for our range of business, education, retirement and pop culture magazines, but also newsletters, media releases and other material for our sister companies Canidae/Felidae and My Job Space.

While I am no longer a full time member of the Academy family as I work towards my Bachelor of Arts degree in Media and Communications and Sociology, I am still a regular freelance contributor to our widely read publications.
